The most recent advancements in technology have greatly facilitated the design of small wooden homes. When building a new home, you can choose from a variety of structural woods, but your final choices will be determined by your design and your budget, with local woods being the most affordable. The appropriate selection of wood can significantly enhance even the simplest designs, as can be seen in some of the listings that are included. The design of the roof, the number of floors, and the location of the house's entrance would all be affected by the climate, topography, and location of the site. Building permits will also vary based on your community's laws. While small wood homes are encouraged and welcomed in some locales, you won't be able to go very small in others due to minimum square footage restrictions.
We've provided a number of lovely living spaces with interiors clad in wood, giving the impression of a cottage. If you're new to living in a small house, you should give extra space a lot of thought to make sure you have enough room for your family to grow. This could mean adding a bedroom, bathroom, playroom, or storage space. Wood homes are ideal for youngsters to experience childhood in, particularly in the event that your area is encircled with nature.
The architecture of an all-season cottage would need to take into consideration various heating options. To incorporate it, you may need a small basement, crawl space, or attic. Cultural habits can also affect the design as a whole. Note: We classify a home as small if it has less than 2000 square feet of living space; however, if you're looking for super-compact homes with less than 1000 square feet, please visit our compact homes section. Or, if you'd rather be mobile, check out these tiny wooden houses that can be moved. The following is a list of our current favorites, many of which have their own fascinating stories. For your convenience, we grouped them by architectural style. Let's begin our tour now.

We prefer a traditional roof plan with gables because we think it looks best.
Have you ever wished you had a bedroom in the attic? A roof with a high pitch allows for a larger attic and is more expensive to build, but it also lets you fit more rooms or create a loft in the chalet style. The church-style vaulted ceiling, which raises the ceiling from the floor to a peak, is yet another cutting-edge modern option. Low-pitch roofs and small attics are less expensive, but they should be high enough to allow for HVAC systems and easy electrical access. Sometimes, hanging your favorite chandelier from the attic is the easiest way to do so. Higher pitch roofs are preferred in areas with a lot of snow, while low roofs are most common in warm areas like California.
A stunning low-rise roof design can be seen in this first wooden house in California. It only has 1100 square feet and is surrounded by a wood deck and covered in knotty cedar siding. The clever extension of the asymmetrical roof on one side creates a car port. It descends to the point where you can touch it due to the geometry's disproportional width. This and the open gables are the two design features that give this house a stunning bungalow-like appearance that screams "Summer. These kinds of designs are common in California. What a lovely, contemporary cottage!
This design is a good illustration of how the house's height is determined by the topography of the site. The high roof and attic were necessary because the sea had to be seen from above the dunes. The attic can be used as a library, where you can read quietly while taking in the view. This is a great feature for a seaside cottage. Additionally, note that the A-shaped section appears to be higher than the floor below it. This is due to the fact that the first floor actually consists of a partially submerged basement with three bedrooms and a storage room. The rooms remain naturally cool, which is an advantage. Overall, this amazing small house has a surprising and contemporary appeal that makes it appear much larger than it actually is. Amazing construction.
